제 27항 "하나의 거룩한 교회"

우리는 하나인 보편적인 교회를 믿고 고백합니다. 교회는 예수 그리스도의 피로 죄용서함을 받고 성령으로 성화되고 인쳐졌으며 그리스도 안에서 완전한 구원을 기다리는 참된 기독교 성도들로 이루어진 거룩한 회중입니다. 이 교회는 세상의 시작으로부터 존재하여 그리스도께서 영원한 왕이신 것처럼 그의 백성인 교회도 영원히 존재하는 사실에서 보듯이 끝까지 지속될 것입니다. 그리고 하나님께서 온 세상의 박해로부터, 비록 한 때 교회가 매우 작아 보이고 사람의 눈에 사라질 것 같이 보여도, 이 거룩한 교회를 보존하십니다. 예를 들어서, 아합 시대의 위험한 상황에서 주님께서 자신을 위하여 바알에게 절하지 아니한 칠천 명을 보존하셨습니다. 그러므로 이 거룩한 교회는 어느 한 장소나 사람들에게 제한되거나, 매이거나, 구속되지 아니합니다. 교회는 온 세상에 전파되고 퍼져서 존재하지만, 한 성령 안에서 신앙의 능력으로 한 마음과 뜻으로 연합되고 연결됩니다.

Article 27: Of the Catholic Christian Church.

We believe and profess, one catholic or universal Church, which is an holy congregation, of true Christian believers, all expecting their salvation in Jesus Christ, being washed by his blood, sanctified and sealed by the Holy Ghost. This Church hath been from the beginning of the world, and will be to the end thereof; which is evident from this, that Christ is an eternal King, which, without subjects, cannot be. And this holy Church is preserved or supported by God, against the rage of the whole world; though she sometimes (for a while) appears very small, and in the eyes of men, to be reduced to nothing: as during the perilous reign of Ahab, the Lord reserved unto him seven thousand men, who had not bowed their knees to Baal.

Furthermore, this holy Church is not confined, bound, or limited to a certain place or to certain persons, but is spread and dispersed over the whole world; and yet is joined and united with heart and will, by the power of faith, in one and the same spirit.

제27조. 거룩한 보편적 교회 

  우리는 하나의 유일한 보편적 또는 우주적 교회를 믿고 고백합니다. 이 교회는 예수 그리스도 안에서 그들의 완전한 구원을 기다리면서 그리스도의 피로 씻음을 받고 성령의 거룩하게 하심과 인치심을 받은 참된 그리스도인들의 거룩한 회중이요 모임입니다.

  이 교회는 세상의 처음부터 있었고 끝날까지 있을 것인데, 이는 그리스도께서 백성 없이 계실 수 없는 영원한 왕이시기 때문입니다. 이 거룩한 교회는 비록 잠시 동안 사람의 눈에는 매우 작아서 마치 소멸된 것처럼 보일 수도 있지만, 온 세상의 분노에도 굴하지 않고 하나님에 의해 보존됩니다. 예를 들면, 아합의 학정 동안에도 주님께서는 바알에게 무릎 꿇지 않은 칠천 명을 친히 보존하셨습니다(왕상 19:18).

  그러므로 이 거룩한 교회는 어떤 특정한 지역이나 특정한 사람들에게 국한되거나 묶이거나 제한되지 않으며, 오히려 온 세계에 퍼져 있고 흩어져 있으며, 그러면서도 이 교회는 여전히 믿음의 능력으로 동일하신 한 분 성령 안에서 한 마음과 한 뜻으로 연결되고 연합되어 있습니다.

Article 27: The Holy Catholic Church

We believe and confess

one single catholic or universal church—

a holy congregation and gathering

of true Christian believers,

awaiting their entire salvation in Jesus Christ,

being washed by his blood,

and sanctified and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

This church has existed from the beginning of the world

and will last until the end,

as appears from the fact

that Christ is eternal King

who cannot be without subjects.

And this holy church is preserved by God

against the rage of the whole world,

even though for a time

it may appear very small

to human eyes—

as though it were snuffed out.

For example,

during the very dangerous time of Ahab

the Lord preserved for himself seven thousand

who did not bend their knees to Baal.

And so this holy church

is not confined,

bound,

or limited to a certain place or certain people.

But it is spread and dispersed

throughout the entire world,

though still joined and united

in heart and will,

in one and the same Spirit,

by the power of faith.
