It Must Be Bought

On all bare heights shall be their pasture — Isa 49:9

Toys and trinkets are easily won, but the greatest things are greatly bought. The top-most place of power is always bought with blood. You may have the pinnacles if you have enough blood to pay. That is the conquest condition of the holy heights everywhere. The story of real heroisms is the story of sacrificial blood. The chiefest values in life and character are not blown across our way by vagrant winds. Great souls have great sorrows.

“Great truths are dearly bought, the common truths,

Such as men give and take from day to day,

Come in the common walk of easy life,

Blown by the careless wind across our way.

“Great truths are greatly won, not found by chance,

Nor wafted on the breath of summer dream;

But grasped in the great struggle of the soul,

Hard buffeting with adverse wind and stream.

“But in the day of conflict, fear and grief,

When the strong hand of God, put forth in might,

Plows up the subsoil of the stagnant heart,

And brings the imprisoned truth seed to the light.

“Wrung from the troubled spirit, in hard hours

Of weakness, solitude, perchance of pain,

Truth springs like harvest from the well-plowed field,

And the soul feels it has not wept in vain.”

The capacity for knowing God enlarges as we are brought by Him into circumstances which oblige us to exercise faith; so, when difficulties beset our path let us thank God that He is taking trouble with us, and lean hard upon Him.

11월 3일 이사야 49:9 내가 잡혀 있는 자에게 이르기를 나오라 하며 흑암에 있는 자에게 나타나라 하리라 그들이 길에서 먹겠고 모든 헐벗은 산에도 그들의 풀밭이 있을 것인즉

흔해 빠진 것이 장난감이나 장신구라고 하지만 희귀한 것들에는 역시 무시 못 할 값이 붙습니다. 가장 높은 권좌는 언제나 피와 고통으로 사야 하며, 누구나 충분한 피의 대가를 치러야 그러한 정상의 자리에 도달할 수 있습니다. 이것 이 어디서나 거룩한 정상에 오르는 조건입니다. 진정한 영웅들의 이야기는 언제나 희생한 피와 고통의 이야기입니다. 삶의 참된 가치와 덕성은 바람 한 번 분다고 우리 인생길 아무 데서나 툭툭 불려 나오지 않습니다. 그러니 위대한 영혼은 크나큰 슬픔을 겪을 수밖에 없습니다.

위대한 진리는 그 값이 비쌉니다.

우리가 날마다 주고받는 소소한 진리들,

인생길 아무 데서나 만나고, 바람 한 번에

쉽게 불려 나오는 진리들과는 다릅니다.

위대한 진리는 위대하게 얻는 것이니, 우연도 아니요.

한여름 밤의 꿈을 타고 쉽게 건너오지도 않습니다.

그러므로 우리 영혼의 위대한 투쟁을 통해서,

온갖 역류와 역풍 뚫고서야 오는 것입니다.

그 투쟁과 두려움과 슬픔의 날에

강하게 내미신 하나님의 손이

가라앉은 우리 가슴의 깊은 땅 쟁기질 하사

갇혔던 진리의 씨앗 환하게 드러내십니다.

그 약하고 고독하며 힘겨웠던 나날을 견뎌 낸

영혼 속에서, 고통스럽게 머리 내민 진리가

곱게 갈아 넘긴 들판의 작물처럼 자라고,

우리의 영혼, 헛되이 울지 않았음을 압니다.

우리가 믿음을 행사할 수 있는 환경에 처할 때, 하나님을 아는 우리의 능력이 확대됩니다. 그러므로 고난이 우리의 길을 막으면 그분께서 친히 우리를 대하심에 감사드리고, 그분께 더욱 깊이 의지하기를 간절히 바라십시오.
