Quicken Us

Thou, who hast showed us many and sore troubles, wilt quicken us again — Ps 71:20

God shows us the troubles. Sometimes, as this part of our education is being carried forward, we have to descend into “the lower parts of the earth,” pass through subterranean passages, lie buried amongst the dead, but never for a moment is the cord of fellowship and union between God and us strained to breaking; and from the depths God will bring us again.

Never doubt God! Never say that He has forsaken or forgotten. Never think that He is unsympathetic. He will quicken again. There is always a smooth piece in every skein, however tangled. The longest day at last rings out the evensong. The winter snow lies long, but it goes at last.

Be steadfast; your labor is not in vain. God turns again, and comforts. And when He does, the heart which had forgotten its Psalmody breaks out in jubilant song, as does the Psalmist: “I will thank thee, I will harp unto thee, my lips shall sing aloud.” — Selected

“Though the rain may fall and the wind be blowing,

And cold and chill is the wintry blast;

Though the cloudy sky is still cloudier growing,

And the dead leaves tell that the summer has passed;

My face I hold to the stormy heaven,

My heart is as calm as the summer sea,

Glad to receive what my God has given,

Whate’er it be.

When I feel the cold, I can say, ’He sends it,’

And His winds blow blessing, I surely know;

For I’ve never a want but that He attends it;

And my heart beats warm, though the winds may blow.”

11월 19일 시편 71:20 우리에게 여러 가지 심한 고난을 보이신 주께서 우리를 다시 살리시며 땅 깊은 곳에서 다시 이끌어 올리시리이다

하나님께서 여러분에게 고난을 보이십니다. 여러분은 더러 교육 과정의 일환으로 "땅 깊은 곳에 들어" 가야 합니다(시 63:9). 땅 밑의 어두운 길 다녀야 하고, 죽은 자들 가운데 묻혀야 합니다. 그러나 하나님과 여러분의 사귐과 하나 됨의 끈이 끊어질 정도까지 가는 경우는 단 한순간도 없습니다. 그리고 결국은 하나님께서 그 깊은 곳에서 여러분을 다시 살리실 것입니다.

하나님을 의심하지 마십시오. 그분께서 여러분을 버리고 잊으셨다 말하지 말고, 무정한 분이라 생각하지도 마십시오. 길이 아무리 휘고 험해도 가다 보면 언제나 곧고 평탄한 부분이 있기 마련입니다. 아무리 힘들고 길어도 해 안 떨어지는 날 없고, 겨울눈이 마냥 쌓여 있을 듯 싶어도 결국은 녹습니다. “너희 수고가 주 안에서 헛되지 않은 줄을 앎이라” (고전 15:58) 하셨으니 굳게 서십시오. 그분께서 다시 돌아와 여러분을 위로하실 것입니다. 그리하면 노래를 잊었던 여러분의 가슴 다시 고동쳐서, 감사와 기쁨의 노래 부를 것입니다. 시편 기자도 그랬습니다. "내 혀가 주의 의를 높이 노래하리이다" (시 51:14).

비 내리고 바람 불어라.

겨울바람 뼛속까지 시려라,

흐린 하늘 먹구름에 덮이고

죽은 잎들, 여름은 갔다고 말하라,

나의 얼굴 폭풍의 하늘 향해도

내 마음 여름 바다처럼 고요하고

하나님께서 주시는 것

무엇이든 기쁨으로 받는다.

날 추우면 “하나님께서 보내셨다" 말하리라.

그리고 확신하노니 그분의 바람은 축복의 바람,

채워 주시지 아니할 필요 내 앞에 두지 않으심에,

하여 바람은 불어도 나의 따뜻한 가슴 뛰느니,
