Ecclesiastes 10
New Living Translation
10 As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink,
so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.

2 A wise person chooses the right road;
a fool takes the wrong one.

3 You can identify fools
just by the way they walk down the street!

4 If your boss is angry at you, don’t quit!
A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.

The Ironies of Life
5 There is another evil I have seen under the sun. Kings and rulers make a grave mistake 6 when they give great authority to foolish people and low positions to people of proven worth. 7 I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes—and princes walking like servants!

8 When you dig a well,
you might fall in.
When you demolish an old wall,
you could be bitten by a snake.
9 When you work in a quarry,
stones might fall and crush you.
When you chop wood,
there is danger with each stroke of your ax.

10 Using a dull ax requires great strength,
so sharpen the blade.
That’s the value of wisdom;
it helps you succeed.

11 If a snake bites before you charm it,
what’s the use of being a snake charmer?

12 Wise words bring approval,
but fools are destroyed by their own words.

13 Fools base their thoughts on foolish assumptions,
so their conclusions will be wicked madness;
14 they chatter on and on.

No one really knows what is going to happen;
no one can predict the future.

15 Fools are so exhausted by a little work
that they can’t even find their way home.

16 What sorrow for the land ruled by a servant,[a]
the land whose leaders feast in the morning.
17 Happy is the land whose king is a noble leader
and whose leaders feast at the proper time
to gain strength for their work, not to get drunk.

18 Laziness leads to a sagging roof;
idleness leads to a leaky house.

19 A party gives laughter,
wine gives happiness,
and money gives everything!

20 Never make light of the king, even in your thoughts.
And don’t make fun of the powerful, even in your own bedroom.
For a little bird might deliver your message
and tell them what you said.

[전]10:1 죽은 파리들이 향수에서 악취가 나게 하듯, 조그만 어리석음이 지혜와 영예를 더럽히고 만다.
[전]10:2 지혜자의 마음은 옳은 곳으로 향하지만, 어리석은 자의 마음은 그릇된 곳으로 향한다.
[전]10:3 어리석은 자는 길을 걸을 때에도, 지혜가 모자라 자신의 우둔함을 모두에게 드러낸다.
[전]10:4 통치자가 네게 화를 낸다 해도, 네 자리를 떠나지 마라. 왜냐하면 침착하기만 하면 큰 실수를 막을 수 있기 때문이다.
[전]10:5 내가 또한 살펴보니 통치자와 연관된 폐단이 있었다.
[전]10:6 어리석은 자들이 높은 자리에 앉고, 부한 자들이 낮은 자리에 앉았다.
[전]10:7 또 살펴보니, 노예들은 말을 타고, 귀족들은 노예처럼 걸어갔다.
[전]10:8 함정을 파는 자는 자신이 그 곳에 빠질 수 있고, 벽을 허는 자는 독사에 물릴 수 있다.
[전]10:9 돌을 떠내는 자는 돌 때문에 상할 수 있고, 장작을 패는 자는 장작 때문에 죽을 수 있다.
[전]10:10 무딘 도끼 날을 갈지 않으면 힘이 많이 들지만, 지혜를 쓰면 성공한다.
[전]10:11 뱀에게 마술을 걸기 전에 물린다면 그의 마술이 무슨 소용이 있겠는가?
[전]10:12 지혜자의 말은 은혜롭지만, 어리석은 자는 자기 두 입술로 신세를 망친다.
[전]10:13 어리석은 자는 미련하게 말하기 시작하다가 나중에는 미치광이처럼 말을 하고 만다.
[전]10:14 이렇듯 어리석은 자는 말을 많이 한다. 일 분 앞도 알지 못하는 사람들이, 죽은 다음에 일어날 일을 어떻게 말할 수 있겠는가?
[전]10:15 어리석은 자는 자기 일에 지쳐서, 자기 동네 가는 길도 찾지 못해 허둥댄다.
일의 가치
[전]10:16 왕이 노예 출신이고, 대신들이 아침부터 잔치에 빠져 있는 나라여, 화가 있을 것이다.
[전]10:17 반면, 왕이 귀한 집안 출신이고, 대신들이 즐기기 위함이 아니라, 건강을 위해 먹는 나라여, 복되도다.
[전]10:18 게으르면 서까래가 내려앉고, 태만히 손을 놀리면 집이 샌다.
[전]10:19 잔치는 즐거움을 위한 것이고, 포도주는 인생을 즐겁게 해 주는 것이며, 돈은 모든 것을 해결해 준다.
[전]10:20 마음으로도 왕을 저주하지 말고, 잠자리에서라도 부자를 저주하지 마라. 왜냐하면 공중의 새가 네 말을 전하고, 날짐승이 네 말을 전파할 것이기 때문이다.
