Ecclesiastes 10
New Living Translation
10 As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink,
so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.

2 A wise person chooses the right road;
a fool takes the wrong one.

3 You can identify fools
just by the way they walk down the street!

4 If your boss is angry at you, don’t quit!
A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.

The Ironies of Life
5 There is another evil I have seen under the sun. Kings and rulers make a grave mistake 6 when they give great authority to foolish people and low positions to people of proven worth. 7 I have even seen servants riding horseback like princes—and princes walking like servants!

8 When you dig a well,
you might fall in.
When you demolish an old wall,
you could be bitten by a snake.
9 When you work in a quarry,
stones might fall and crush you.
When you chop wood,
there is danger with each stroke of your ax.

10 Using a dull ax requires great strength,
so sharpen the blade.
That’s the value of wisdom;
it helps you succeed.

11 If a snake bites before you charm it,
what’s the use of being a snake charmer?

12 Wise words bring approval,
but fools are destroyed by their own words.

13 Fools base their thoughts on foolish assumptions,
so their conclusions will be wicked madness;
14 they chatter on and on.

No one really knows what is going to happen;
no one can predict the future.

15 Fools are so exhausted by a little work
that they can’t even find their way home.

16 What sorrow for the land ruled by a servant,[a]
the land whose leaders feast in the morning.
17 Happy is the land whose king is a noble leader
and whose leaders feast at the proper time
to gain strength for their work, not to get drunk.

18 Laziness leads to a sagging roof;
idleness leads to a leaky house.

19 A party gives laughter,
wine gives happiness,
and money gives everything!

20 Never make light of the king, even in your thoughts.
And don’t make fun of the powerful, even in your own bedroom.
For a little bird might deliver your message
and tell them what you said.

1. 향수에 빠져 죽은 파리가 향수에서 악취가 나게 하듯이, 변변치 않은 적은 일 하나가 지혜를 가리고 명예를 더럽힌다.
2. 지혜로운 사람의 마음은 옳은 일 쪽으로 기울고, 어리석은 사람의 마음은 그릇된 일 쪽으로 기운다.
3. 어리석은 자는 길을 갈 때에도, 생각 없이 자기의 어리석음을 누구에게나 드러낸다.
4. 통치자가 너에게 화를 낼 때에, 너는 네 자리를 뜨지 말아라. 침착하면 큰 잘못을 막을 수 있다.
5. 내가 세상에서 본 잘못된 일 또 하나는, 역시 통치자에게서 볼 수 있는 크나큰 허물이다.
6. 어리석은 사람을 높은 자리에 앉히고, 존귀한 사람을 낮은 자리에 앉히는 것이다.
7. 내가 보니, 종은 말을 타고, 상전은 종처럼 걸어다니는 일이 있더라.
8. 구덩이를 파는 자는 거기에 빠질 수가 있고, 담을 허무는 자는 뱀에게 물릴 수가 있다.
9. 돌을 떠내는 자는 돌에 다칠 수가 있고, 나무를 패는 자는 나무에 다칠 수가 있다.
10. 도끼가 무딘데도 그 날을 갈지 않고 쓰면, 힘이 더 든다. 그러나 지혜는 사람을 성공하도록 돕는다.
11. 뱀을 부리지도 못하고 뱀에게 물리면, 뱀을 부린다는 그 사람은 쓸 데가 없다.
12. 지혜로운 사람은 말을 해서 덕을 보고, 어리석은 사람은 제 입으로 한 말 때문에 망한다.
13. 어리석은 자의 입에서 나오는 말은, 어리석음으로 시작해서 사악한 광기로 끝난다.
14. 그런데도 어리석은 자는 말을 하고 또 한다. 무슨 일이 일어날지 아는 사람은 없다. 앞으로 일어날 일을 말해 줄 수 있는 사람이 누구인가?
15. 제 집으로 가는 길조차 못 찾는 어리석은 자는, 일을 해도 피곤하기만 하다.
16. 왕은 어리고, 대신들은 이른 아침부터 잔치에 빠져 있는 나라여, 너는 저주를 받을 것이다.
17. 왕은 출신이 고귀하고, 대신들은 취하려고 해서가 아니라, 건강을 지키려고 제때에 먹는 나라여, 너는 복을 받을 것이다.
18. 게으른 자의 집은 들보가 내려앉고, 손이 놀면 지붕이 샌다.
19. 잔치는 기뻐하려고 벌이는 것이다. 포도주는 인생을 즐겁게 하고, 돈은 만사를 해결한다.
20. 마음 속으로라도 왕을 욕하지 말며, 잠자리에서라도 존귀한 이를 저주하지 말아라. 하늘을 나는 새가 네 말을 옮기고, 날짐승이 네 소리를 전할 것이다.
