1우리가 성벽을 다시 쌓아 올리고 있다는 소식을 들은 산발랏은, 몹시 분개하며 화를 내었다. 그는 유다 사람을 비웃으며,		1When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
2자기 동료들과 사마리아 군인들이 듣는 데에서 "힘도 없는 유다인들이 도대체 무슨 일을 하는 거냐? 이 성벽을 다시 쌓는다고? 여기에서 제사를 지내겠다는 거냐? 하루 만에 일을 끝낸다는 거냐? 불타 버린 돌을 흙무더기 속에서 다시 꺼내서 쓸 수 있다는 거냐?" 하고 빈정거렸다.		2and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, 'What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble-burned as they are?'
3그의 곁에 서 있는 암몬 사람 도비야도 한 마디 거들었다. "다시 쌓으면 뭘 합니까? 돌로 성벽을 쌓는다지만, 여우 한 마리만 기어올라가도 무너지고 말 겁니다."		3Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, 'What they are building-if even a fox climbed up on it, he would break down their wall of stones!'
4"우리의 하나님, 들어주십시오. 우리가 이렇게 업신여김을 받고 있습니다. 제발, 우리에게 퍼붓는 그 욕이 그들에게 되돌아가게 하여 주십시오. 그들이 노략을 당하게 하시고, 남의 나라로 끌려가게 하여 주십시오.		4Hear us, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
5그들의 죄를 용서하지 마시고, 그들의 죄를 못 본 체하지 마십시오. 그들이야말로 성을 쌓고 있는 우리 앞에서 주님을 모욕한 자들입니다."		5Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.
6우리는 성 쌓는 일을 계속하였다. 백성이 마음을 모아서 열심히 일하였으므로, 성벽 두르기는 마칠 수 있었으나, 높이는 반밖에 쌓지 못하였다.		6So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
7그 때에 산발랏과 도비야와 아랍 사람들과 암몬 사람들과 아스돗 사람들은, 예루살렘 성벽 재건이 잘 되어가고 있으며, 군데군데 무너진 벽을 다시 잇기 시작하였다는 소식을 듣고서, 몹시 화를 내면서,		7But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem's walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.
8한꺼번에 예루살렘으로 올라와서 성을 치기로 함께 모의하였다. 우리를 혼란에 빠뜨리려는 것이었다.		8They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.
9그래서 우리는, 한편으로는 우리의 하나님께 기도를 드리고, 다른 한편으로는 경비병을 세워, 밤낮으로 지키게 하였다.		9But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat.
10그런데 유다 사람들 사이에서 이런 노래가 퍼지고 있었다. 흙더미는 아직도 산더미 같은데, 짊어지고 나르다 힘이 다 빠졌으니, 우리 힘으로는 이 성벽 다 쌓지 못하리.		10Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, 'The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.'
11한편 우리의 원수들은, 쥐도 새도 모르게 쳐들어와서 우리를 죽여서, 일을 못하게 하려고 계획하고 있었다.		11Also our enemies said, 'Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.'
12그들 가까이에서 사는 유다 사람들이 우리에게 올라와서, 그들이 사방에서 우리를 치려고 한다고, 열 번이나 일러주었다.		12Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, 'Wherever you turn, they will attack us.'
13그래서 나는 백성 가운데서 얼마를 가문별로, 칼과 창과 활로 무장시켜서, 성벽 뒤 낮은 빈터에 배치하였다.		13Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.
14백성이 두려워하는 것을 보고, 나는 귀족들과 관리들과 그 밖의 백성들을 격려하였다. "그들을 두려워하지 말아라. 위대하고 두려운 주님을 기억하고, 형제자매와 자식과 아내와 가정을 지켜야 하니, 싸워라."		14After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."
15드디어 우리의 원수들은 자기들의 음모가 우리에게 새나갔다는 것을 알게 되었다. 하나님이 그들의 음모를 헛되게 하셨으므로, 우리는 모두 성벽으로 돌아와서, 저마다 하던 일을 계속하였다.		15When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to his own work.
16그 날부터 내가 데리고 있는 젊은이 가운데서 반은 일을 하고, 나머지 반은 창과 방패와 활과 갑옷으로 무장을 하였다. 관리들은 성벽을 쌓고 있는 유다 백성 뒤에 진을 쳤다.		16From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah
17짐을 나르는 이들은, 한 손으로는 짐을 나르고, 다른 한 손으로는 무기를 잡았다.		17who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other,
18성벽을 쌓는 이들은 저마다 허리에 칼을 차고 일을 하였다. 나팔수는 나의 곁에 있게 하였다.		18and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.
19나는 귀족들과 관리들과 그 밖의 백성에게 지시하였다. "하여야 할 일이 많은데다, 일하는 지역이 넓으므로, 우리는 성벽을 따라서 서로 멀리 떨어져 있다.		19Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall.
20어디에서든지 나팔 소리를 들으면, 그 소리가 나는 곳으로 모여와서, 우리와 합세하여라. 우리 하나님이 우리 편이 되어서 싸워 주신다."		20Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!'
21우리는 이른 새벽부터 밤에 별이 보일 때까지 일을 하였다. 우리 가운데 반수는 창을 들고 일을 하였다.		21So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.
22이 기간에 나는 또 백성에게 명령하였다. "밤에는 저마다 자기가 데리고 있는 부하들과 함께 예루살렘 성 안으로 들어와 묵으면서 경계를 서고, 낮에는 일을 하여라."		22At that time I also said to the people, 'Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and workmen by day.'
23나도, 나의 형제들도, 내가 데리고 있는 젊은이들도, 나를 따르는 경비병들도, 우리 가운데 어느 누구도 옷을 벗지 않았으며, 물을 길러 갈 때에도 무기를 들고 다녔다.		23Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.
