John 2 Christian Standard Bible The First Sign: Turning Water into Wine 2 On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee. Jesus’s mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding as well. 3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’s mother told him, “They don’t have any wine.” 4 “What has this concern of yours to do with me,[a] woman?” Jesus asked. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 “Do whatever he tells you,” his mother told the servants. 6 Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained twenty or thirty gallons.[b] 7 “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter.”[c] And they did. 9 When the headwaiter tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom 10 and told him, “Everyone sets out the fine wine first, then, after people are drunk, the inferior. But you have kept the fine wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this, he went down to Capernaum, together with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they stayed there only a few days. Cleansing the Temple 13 The Jewish Passover was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and he also found the money changers sitting there. 15 After making a whip out of cords, he drove everyone out of the temple with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. 16 He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”[d] 17 And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me.[e] 18 So the Jews replied to him, “What sign will you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple,[f] and I will raise it up in three days.” 20 Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build,[g] and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. 22 So when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made. 23 While he was in Jerusalem during the Passover Festival, many believed in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. 24 Jesus, however, would not entrust himself to them, since he knew them all 25 and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man. "여자여, 그것이 나와 당신에게 무슨 상관이 있습니까? 아직도 내 때가 오지 않았습니다." 5. 그 어머니가 일꾼들에게 이르기를 "무엇이든지, 그가 시키는 대로 하세요" 하였다. 6. 그런데 유대 사람의 정결 예법을 따라, 거기에는 돌로 만든 물항아리 여섯이 놓여 있었는데, 그것은 물 두세 동이들이 항아리였다. 7. 예수께서 일꾼들에게 말씀하셨다. "이 항아리에 물을 채워라." 그래서 그들은 항아리마다 물을 가득 채웠다. 8. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하시기를 "이제는 떠서, 잔치를 맡은 이에게 가져다 주어라" 하시니, 그들이 그대로 하였다. 9. 잔치를 맡은 이는, 포도주로 변한 물을 맛보고, 그것이 어디에서 났는지 알지 못하였으나, 물을 떠온 일꾼들은 알았다. 그래서 잔치를 맡은 이는 신랑을 불러서 10. 그에게 말하기를 "누구든지 먼저 좋은 포도주를 내놓고, 손님들이 취한 뒤에 덜 좋은 것을 내놓는데, 그대는 이렇게 좋은 포도주를 지금까지 남겨 두었구려!" 하였다. 11. 예수께서 이 첫 번 표징을 갈릴리 가나에서 행하여 자기의 영광을 드러내시니, 그의 제자들이 그를 믿게 되었다. 12. 이 일이 있은 뒤에, 예수께서는 그의 어머니와 형제들과 제자들과 함께 가버나움에 내려가셔서, 거기에 며칠 동안 머물러 계셨다. 13. 유대 사람의 유월절이 가까워져서, 예수께서 예루살렘으로 올라가셨다. 14. 그는 성전 뜰에서, 소와 양과 비둘기를 파는 사람들과 돈 바꾸어 주는 사람들이 앉아 있는 것을 보시고, 15. 노끈으로 채찍을 만들어 양과 소와 함께 그들을 모두 성전에서 내쫓으시고, 돈 바꾸어 주는 사람들의 돈을 쏟아 버리시고, 상을 둘러 엎으셨다. 16. 비둘기 파는 사람들에게는 "이것을 걷어치워라. 내 아버지의 집을 장사하는 집으로 만들지 말아라" 하고 말씀하셨다. 17. 제자들은 '주님의 집을 생각하는 열정이 나를 삼킬 것이다' 하고 기록한 성경 말씀을 기억하였다. 18. 유대 사람들이 예수께 물었다. "당신이 이런 일을 하다니, 무슨 표징을 우리에게 보여 주겠소?" 19. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "이 성전을 허물어라. 그러면 내가 사흘 만에 다시 세우겠다." 20. 그러자 유대 사람들이 말하였다. "이 성전을 짓는 데에 마흔여섯 해나 걸렸는데, 이것을 사흘 만에 세우겠다구요?" 21. 그러나 예수께서 성전이라고 하신 것은 자기 몸을 두고 하신 말씀이었다. 22. 제자들은, 예수께서 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나신 뒤에야, 그가 말씀하신 것을 기억하고서, 성경 말씀과 예수께서 하신 말씀을 믿게 되었다. 23. 예수께서 유월절에 예루살렘에 계시는 동안에, 많은 사람이 그가 행하시는 표징을 보고 그 이름을 믿었다. 24. 그러나 예수께서는 모든 사람을 알고 계시므로, 그들에게 몸을 맡기지 않으셨다. 25. 그는 사람에 대해서는 어느 누구의 증언도 필요하지 않으셨기 때문이다. 그는 사람의 마음 속에 있는 것까지도 알고 계셨던 것이다.
