1 'There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined. 1 은이 나는 곳이 있고 금을 제련하는 곳이 있으며 2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore. 2 철은 흙에서 캐내고 동은 돌에서 녹여 얻느니라 3 Man puts an end to the darkness; he searches the farthest recesses for ore in the blackest darkness. 3 사람은 어둠을 뚫고 모든 것을 끝까지 탐지하여 어둠과 죽음의 그늘에 있는 광석도 탐지하되 4 Far from where people dwell he cuts a shaft, in places forgotten by the foot of man; far from men he dangles and sways. 4 그는 사람이 사는 곳에서 멀리 떠나 갱도를 깊이 뚫고 발길이 닿지 않는 곳 사람이 없는 곳에 매달려 흔들리느니라 5 The earth, from which food comes, is transformed below as by fire; 5 음식은 땅으로부터 나오나 그 밑은 불처럼 변하였도다 6 sapphires come from its rocks, and its dust contains nuggets of gold. 6 그 돌에는 청옥이 있고 사금도 있으며 7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path, no falcon's eye has seen it. 7 그 길은 솔개도 알지 못하고 매의 눈도 보지 못하며 8 Proud beasts do not set foot on it, and no lion prowls there. 8 용맹스러운 짐승도 밟지 못하였고 사나운 사자도 그리로 지나가지 못하였느니라 9 Man's hand assaults the flinty rock and lays bare the roots of the mountains. 9 사람이 굳은 바위에 손을 대고 산을 뿌리까지 뒤엎으며 10 He tunnels through the rock; his eyes see all its treasures. 10 반석에 수로를 터서 각종 보물을 눈으로 발견하고 11 He searches the sources of the rivers and brings hidden things to light. 11 누수를 막아 스며 나가지 않게 하고 감추어져 있던 것을 밝은 데로 끌어내느니라 12 'But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? 12 그러나 지혜는 어디서 얻으며 명철이 있는 곳은 어디인고 13 Man does not comprehend its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. 13 그 길을 사람이 알지 못하나니 사람 사는 땅에서는 찾을 수 없구나 14 The deep says, 'It is not in me'; the sea says, 'It is not with me.' 14 깊은 물이 이르기를 내 속에 있지 아니하다 하며 바다가 이르기를 나와 함께 있지 아니하다 하느니라 15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver. 15 순금으로도 바꿀 수 없고 은을 달아도 그 값을 당하지 못하리니 16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or sapphires. 16 오빌의 금이나 귀한 청옥수나 남보석으로도 그 값을 당하지 못하겠고 17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold. 17 황금이나 수정이라도 비교할 수 없고 정금 장식품으로도 바꿀 수 없으며 18 Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies. 18 진주와 벽옥으로도 비길 수 없나니 지혜의 값은 산호보다 귀하구나 19 The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold. 19 구스의 황옥으로도 비교할 수 없고 순금으로도 그 값을 헤아리지 못하리라 20 'Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? 20 그런즉 지혜는 어디서 오며 명철이 머무는 곳은 어디인고 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air. 21 모든 생물의 눈에 숨겨졌고 공중의 새에게 가려졌으며 22 Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.' 22 멸망과 사망도 이르기를 우리가 귀로 그 소문은 들었다 하느니라 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, 23 하나님이 그 길을 아시며 있는 곳을 아시나니 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens. 24 이는 그가 땅 끝까지 감찰하시며 온 천하를 살피시며 25 When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters, 25 바람의 무게를 정하시며 물의 분량을 정하시며 26 when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm, 26 비 내리는 법칙을 정하시고 비구름의 길과 우레의 법칙을 만드셨음이라 27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it. 27 그 때에 그가 보시고 선포하시며 굳게 세우시며 탐구하셨고 28 And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord-that is wisdom,and to shun evil is understanding.' " 28 또 사람에게 말씀하셨도다 보라 주를 경외함이 지혜요 악을 떠남이 명철이니라
