4. 그러므로 우상의 제물을 먹는 일에 대해서 우리는 우상이라는 것이 세상에서 아무것도 아니며 하나님은 한 분밖에 없는 줄로 알고 있습니다.

5. 사람들은 하늘과 땅에 많은 신과 주가 있다고 합니다.

6. 그러나 우리에게 아버지이신 하나님은 한 분뿐이십니다. 그분은 만물을 창조하셨고 우리도 그분을 위해서 존재합니다. 또 우리의 주님도 예수 그리스도 한 분뿐이십니다. 그분을 통해서 만물이 창조되었고 우리도 그분을 통해서 존재하고 있습니다.

7. 그러나 이 진리를 모든 사람이 다 알고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 사람은 아직도 우상에 대한 습관이 남아 있어서 그런 음식을 우상에게 바친 제물로 알고 먹기 때문에 그들의 앙심이 약해져서 더럽혀집니다.

8. 그러나 음식은 우리와 하나님과의 관계에 전혀 영향을 미치지 않습니다. 먹지 않는다고 해서 나쁠 것도 없고 먹는다고 해서 나을 것도 없습니다.

9. 그렇지만 여러분이 가리지 않고 먹는 자유가 믿음이 약한 사람들에게 걸려 넘어지게 하는 장애물이 되지 않도록 조심하십시오.

10. 지식이 있다는 여러분이 우상의 신당에 앉아 먹는 것을 믿음이 약한 사람이 본다면 그의 양심이 담력을 얻어 그도 우상의 제물을 먹지 않겠습니까?

11. 그렇게 되면 여러분의 지식 때문에 믿음이 약한 그 사람은 망하게 됩니다. 그리스도께서는 그 형제를 위해서도 죽으셨습니다.

12. 이와 같이 여러분이 형제들에게 죄를 짓고 그들의 약한 양심을 상하게 하는 것은 그리스도에게 죄를 짓는 것입니다.

13. 그러므로 음식이 내 형제를 죄 짓게 한다면 나는 내 형제를 죄에 빠뜨리지 않기 위해서도 다시는 제물을 먹지 않겠습니다.

4. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one.

5. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"),

6. yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

7. But not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

8. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.

9. Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

10. For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol's temple, won't he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols?

11. So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.

12. When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

13. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

Ⅱ. 우상의 제물을 먹는 일에 대하여 8:4-6

우상의 허구성에 대하여 논한다. 이방인들의 우상에는 아무런 신성(神性)이 없다. 이것들은 단순한 상상의 신들이다. 이방의 신들에게는 진정한 신격(神格)이 존재하지 않으며 하나님 이외의 다른 신은 없다. 우리 기독교인들은 유일하신 하나님이 계심을 맏는다. 모든 것이 그의 것이며 우리를 비롯한 모든 것이 하나님을 위하여 존재한다. 진정한 하나님, 그리고 하나님과 인간사이의 중보자를 바로 아는 것이야말로 기독교인들의 가장 큰 특권이다.

#1-6 There is no proof of ignorance more common than conceit of knowledge.

Much may be known, when nothing is known to good purpose.

And those who think they know any thing, and grow vain thereon, are the least likely to make good use of their knowledge.

Satan hurts some as much by tempting them to be proud of mental powers, as others, by alluring to sensuality.

Knowledge which puffs up the possessor, and renders him confident, is as dangerous as self-righteous pride, though what he knows may be right.

Without holy affections all human knowledge is worthless.

The heathens had gods of higher and lower degree; gods many, and lords many; so called, but not such in truth.

Christians know better.

One God made all, and has power over all.

The one God, even the Father, signifies the Godhead as the sole object of all religious worship; and the Lord Jesus Christ denotes the person of Emmanuel, God manifest in the flesh, One with the Father, and with us; the appointed Mediator, and Lord of all; through whom we come to the Father, and through whom the Father sends all blessings to us, by the influence and working of the Holy Spirit.

While we refuse all worship to the many who are called gods and lords, and to saints and angels, let us try whether we really come to God by faith in Christ.

Ⅲ. 약한 형제를 실족시키는 일 8:7-13

그들이 우상의 신전에 들어가서 그들의 이방인 친구들과 잔치를 즐겨도 된다는 생각은 정당하지 못한 것임을 지적한다. 그는 이런 일이 연약한 교인들에게 미칠 악 영향에 대하여 강조한다.

[1] 당시에 어떤 교인들은 우상이 헛 것이라는 믿음을 확고하게 가지지 못한 상태였다. 이런 연약한 교인들은 가장 평범한 진리도 잘 모르며 또 불확실한 지식만을 가지고 있었다. 그래서, '그들의 양심이 약하고 더러워지는 것이다(7절).' 이들은 바른 지식이 없기 때문에 우상 제물을 먹을 때 우상 숭배에 대한 죄책감을 느끼고 그래서 자기들의 양심을 크게 더럽힌다. 우리들은 약한 형제가 그들의 양심을 더럽히지 않도록 조심해야만 한다.

[2] 바울은 먹고 마시는 것이 덕이 되는 것도 아니며 또한 죄가 되는 것도 아니라고 말한다(8절). 고린도 교인 중에는 신전에서 먹고 마시는 것을 자랑한 사람들이 있었던 것 같다(10절). 그들은 이렇게 하는 것이 아무 것도 아니라는 것을 과시했다. 이런 음식은 먹고 저런 음식은 삼가는 사람을 하나님 앞에 추천할 수 없을 것이다.

[3] 바울은 자유를 남용하는 자들에게 경고를 한다. 비록 그들이 아무 것이라도 먹을 능력을 가졌다고 생각할지라도 그것을 사용하는 데는 주의를 하여야 한다. 그것은 형제들에게 거치는 것이 될 수 있다(9절). 우리는 형제들의 영혼을 위태롭게 하거나 넘어지게 하는 것 보다는 자기 자신의 자유를 포기하는 편이 더 낫다. 그러면 네 지식으로 그 약한 자가 멸망하였다니 그는 그리스도께서 위하여 죽으신 형제라(11절). 만일 그리스도께서 그들을 위하여 죽은 사랑을 생각한다면, 우리도 그들을 위하여 우리 자신을 부인하는 사랑을 가짐이 마땅하지 않은가? 자기의 자유를 유보하지 않아서 형제의 멸망을 초래하는 사람이야말로 예수 그리스도의 성령이 없는 사람이라 할 수 있다. 그 약한 양심을 상하게 하는 것이 곧 그리스도에게 죄를 짓는 것이다(12절). 형제에게 주는 상처는 그리스도에게 주는 상처가 된다. 그리스도께서 그렇게 큰 자비를 베푸신 형제에게 동정을 베풀 것인가 아니면 우리를 위하여 고난을 당한 그리스도에게 죄를 지을 것인가?

[4] 바울은 자기의 경우를 예로 제시한다(13절). 우리는 형제의 영혼을 파멸시키거나 상처를 내면서까지 자신의 권리만을 주장해서는 안 된다. 그렇게 하는 것은 바로 우리의 구속자에게 상처를 주는 것이다. 또 우리 때문에 다른 사람을 죄에 빠지게 하지 않도록 주의해야 한다면, 우리 자신이 죄에 빠지지 않도록 얼마나 주의해야 할 것인가?

#7-13 Eating one kind of food, and abstaining from another, have nothing in them to recommend a person to God.

But the apostle cautions against putting a stumbling-block in the way of the weak; lest they be made bold to eat what was offered to the idol, not as common food, but as a sacrifice, and thereby be guilty of idolatry.

He who has the Spirit of Christ in him, will love those whom Christ loved so as to die for them.

Injuries done to Christians, are done to Christ; but most of all, the entangling them in guilt: wounding their consciences, is wounding him.

We should be very tender of doing any thing that may occasion stumbling to others, though it may be innocent in itself.

And if we must not endanger other men's souls, how much should we take care not to destroy our own! Let Christians beware of approaching the brink of evil, or the appearance of it, though many do this in public matters, for which perhaps they plead plausibly.

Men cannot thus sin against their brethren, without offending Christ, and endangering their own souls.
