제 10 장 효력있는 부르심에 대하여

1. 하나님께서 생명으로 예정하신 모든 사람, 그들만 하나님은 그의 정하시고 받으시는 때에 효력있게 불러내사 그의 말씀과 성령으로 저희를 본래 있던 죄와 사망의 상태에서 예수 그리스도로 말미암는 은혜의 구원에 들어가게 하시기를 기뻐하셨는데, 저희의 마음을 영적으로 밝히사 하나님의 것을 구원받도록 이해하게 하시고 돌 같은 마음을 제하여 버리시고 저희에게 부드러운 마음을 주시고 저희의 뜻을 새롭게 하시고, 그의 전능하신 능력으로 선한 일에 열심하게 하시며 효력있게 저희를 그리스도에게로 이끄신다. 그렇지만 저희는 그의 은혜로 자원하는 심령을 받아 가장 자유롭게 나아온다.

2. 이 효력있는 부르심은 사람에게서 미리 내다본 어떤 것에 기인한 것이 아니라 하나님의 값없이 주시고 특별하신 은혜로만 된 것이다. 사람은 이 일에 있어서 전적으로 수동적이다가 성령으로 살리심을 받고 새로워져서 이 부르심에 응할 수 있게 되고 그 부르심이 제공하는 은혜를 받아 안을 수 있게 된다.

3. 택함 받은 유아들 중에 유아기에 죽는 자들은 성령을 통하여 그리스도로 말미암아 구원을 받는다. 성령은 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 때와 장소와 방법을 임의로 역사하신다. 말씀의 전도로 외면적으로 부르심을 받을 수 없었던 모든 다른 택함 받은 자들이 이와 같다.

4. 이 외에 택함 받지 못한 자들은 비록 말씀의 전도로 부르심을 받고 성령의 역사가 있었을지라도 그리스도에게로 나오지 않고 따라서 구원을 받을 수 없다. 더욱이 그리스도인의 신앙을 고백하지 않는 사람들은 다른 무슨 방법으로도 구원을 받을 수가 없으니 저희가 아무리 부지런하게 저희의 생활을 자연의 빛이나 저희의 종교법에 따라 꾸려 나가도 할 수 없다. 저희가 할 수 있다고 단언하고 주장하는 것은 대단히 해로운 일이며 꺼려야 할 일이다.

Chapter 10 - Of Effectual Calling.
Section 1.) All those whom God hath predestinated unto life, and those only, He is pleased, in His appointed and accepted time, effectually to call,(1) by His Word and Spirit,(2) out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ;(3) enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God;(4) taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them a heart of flesh;(5) renewing their wills, and, by His almighty power determining them to that which is good;(6) and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ;(7) yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.(8)

Section 2.) This effectual call is of God's free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man;(1) who is altogether passive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit,(2) he is thereby enabled to The Westminster Confession of Faith, 11 answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it.(3)

Section 3.) Elect infants, dying in infancy, are regenerated and saved by Christ through the Spirit,(1) who worketh when, and where, and how He pleaseth.(2) So also are all other elect persons, who are uncapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the Word.(3)

Section 4.) Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word,(1) and may have some common operations of the Spirit,(2) yet they never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be saved:(3) much less can men, not professing the Christian religion be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the laws of that religion they do profess;(4) and, to assert and maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be detested.(5)
