5항 생명으로 예정된 사람들은 (롬 8:30, 딤후 1:9, 살전 5:9, 엡 1:4,9,11) 하나님이 이 세상의 기초를 놓으시기 전에 자기의 영원하고 변함없는 목적에 따라 그리스도 안에서 선택되었다. 하나님은 자기의 자유로운 은혜와 사랑으로 피조물들에게 자신을 움직일 만한 족선이나 원인이 될 어떤 다른 것이 없이 오직 비밀의 계획과 하나님의 기쁘신 뜻에 따라 영원한 영광에 이르도록 그들을 그리스도 안에서 선택하셨다. (벧전 1:2, 살후 2:13)
6항 하나님은 택함을 받은 자들에게 영광을 주시려고 정하신 것처럼 하나님의 영원하고 가장 자유로운 의지의 목적을 따라서 그것에 필요한 모든 수단도 미리 정하셨다. (롬 9:13, 엡 2:9,12) 그러므로 택함을 받은 자들은 아담 안에서는 타락했으나 그리스도에 의해 구속함을 받게 되는 것이다. (살전 5:9-10) 그들은 적절한 때에 역사하시는 성령을 통하여 그리스도를 구주로 믿도록 유효적인 부르심을 받게된다. (롬 8:30) 그들은 구원에 이르는 믿음으로 말미암아 의롭다 칭함을 받고, 양자가 되며, 성화되고, 그의 능력으로 보호를 받는다. (벧후 1:3) 택함받지 않은 자들은 그리스도에 의해 구속을 받지 못하고 유효적인 부르심을 받지 못하며, 의롭다 칭함을 받지도 못하며, 양자가 되거나 성화가 되거나 구원을 받지 못한다 .오직 택함을 받은 자들만이 이것을 받을 수 있다. (요 10:26, 요 17:9, 요 6:44)
7항 이 깊고 신비로운 예정의 교리는 특별히 신중하고 조심스럽게 취급되어야 한다. 그의 말씀에 나타난 하나님의 뜻을 받들고 순종하는 사람들은 유효적 소명을 받은 것이 확실하기 때문에 각자가 하나님의 영원한 선택을 받았다는 사실을 확신할 수 있다. (살전 1:4-5, 벧후 1:10) 따라서 이 교리는 하나님께 대한 찬양과 경외와 감탄이 일어나게 한다. (엡 1:6, 롬 11:3) 그리고 복음에 진실히 복종하는 모든 사람에게 겸손과 부지런함과 (롬 11:5-6) 무한한 위로를 준다. (눅 10:20)
