기도 "주의 인자하심을 따라 내 소리를 들으소서 여호와여 주의 규례들을 따라 나를 살리소서" (시 119:49) "Hear my voice in accordance with your love; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your laws." (Psalm 119:49)

우리의 선하신 하나님께서 우리의 어리석음과 연약함을 불쌍히 여기셔서, 자신의 약속을 우리 안에 확증하시고 우리를 향하신 선한 뜻과 은혜를 보증하시며 또한 우리의 신앙을 양육하고 보존하기 위하여 우리를 위하여 성례를 제정하셨음을 우리는 믿습니다. 하나님께서 성례를 복음의 말씀에 더하셔서, 그가 우리로 말씀을 따라서 이해하도록 하신 것과 그리고 그가 우리의 마음 안에 역사하시는 것을,우리에게 부여하시는 구원을 우리 안에 확증하시기 위하여 우리로 하여금 감각을 통하여 더 잘 이해하도록 하십니다. 성례는 성령의 능력을 통하여 하나님께서 우리 안에 역사하시는 방편으로, 내적이며 보이지 아니하는 것의 보이는 표식이며 보증입니다. 그러므로 성례는 우리를 속이는 공허하고 헛된 표식이 아닙니다. 성례가 나타내는 진실을 예수 그리스도로서 그가 나타나지 아니하면 성례는 헛된 것이 됩니다. 더 나아가, 우리는 우리 구주 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 제정하신 성례의 수효에 만족합니다. 성례는 오직 두 개로, 세례와 예수 그리스도의 성찬입니다.

말씀을 붙들고 함께 기도합시다. 은혜의 방편을 허락하신 하나님 감사합니다! 말씀과 함께 역사하시는 성령 하나님! 성례를 통해 더욱 은혜 속에 거하게 하소서! 구원의 표와 인으로 성례를 허락하셨으니 믿음으로 대하게 하소서!

Article 33: Of the Sacraments.

We believe, that our gracious God, on account of our weakness and infirmities hath ordained the sacraments for us, thereby to seal unto us his promises, and to be pledges of the good will and grace of God toward us, and also to nourish and strengthen our faith; which he hath joined to the Word of the gospel, the better to present to our senses, both that which he signifies to us by his Word, and that which he works inwardly in our hearts, thereby assuring and confirming in us the salvation which he imparts to us. For they are visible signs and seals of an inward and invisible thing, by means whereof God worketh in us by the power of the Holy Ghost. Therefore the signs are not in vain or insignificant, so as to deceive us. For Jesus Christ is the true object presented by them, without whom they would be of no moment.

Moreover, we are satisfied with the number of sacraments which Christ our Lord hath instituted, which are two only, namely, the sacrament of baptism, and the holy supper of our Lord Jesus Christ.

제 33 조 성례

The Sacraments

우리는 우리의 은혜로우신 하나님께서 우리의 무감각함(insensitivity)과 연약함을 잊지 않으시어 성례를 제정하시고, 이것으로 우리를 향한 당신의 약속을 우리에게 인치시고(seal), 당신의 선하신 뜻과 은혜를 보증하셨음을 믿습니다. 하나님께서는 이것을 통해 우리의 믿음을 자라게 하시고 유지해 주십니다. 하나님께서 복음의 말씀에 이것을 더하셔서 당신께서 말씀으로 우리에게 선언하신 것과 내적으로 우리 마음속에 행하시는 것을 우리의 외적 감각에 더욱 잘 나타내 보이셨습니다. 이렇게 하나님께서는 당신께서 베풀어 주신 구원을 우리에게 확증해 주십니다. 성례들은 내면적이고 보이지 않는 것에 대한 보이는 표와 인(visible signs and seals)으로, 하나님께서는 이것을 방편으로 성령님의 능력을 통하여 우리 안에서 역사하십니다. 그러므로 표는 헛되거나 무의미하여 우리를 속이는 것이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 예수 그리스도께서 그 성례들의 실재(truth)이시기 때문입니다. 그래서 그리스도를 떠나서 이 성례들은 아무것도 아닙니다. 더 나아가서, 우리는 성례의 수를 우리의 주인이신 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 제정해 주신 두 가지, 즉 세례와 예수 그리스도의 성찬의 성례로 만족합니다.

Article 33: The Sacraments

We believe that our good God,

mindful of our crudeness and weakness,

has ordained sacraments for us

to seal his promises in us,

to pledge good will and grace toward us,

and also to nourish and sustain our faith.

God has added these to the Word of the gospel

to represent better to our external senses

both what God enables us to understand by the Word

and what he does inwardly in our hearts,

confirming in us

the salvation he imparts to us.

For they are visible signs and seals

of something internal and invisible,

by means of which God works in us

through the power of the Holy Spirit.

So they are not empty and hollow signs

to fool and deceive us,

for their truth is Jesus Christ,

without whom they would be nothing.

Moreover,

we are satisfied with the number of sacraments

that Christ our Master has ordained for us.

There are only two:

the sacrament of baptism

and the Holy Supper of Jesus Christ.
