바빌론 심판의 예언

1   이것은 1)바빌로니아 사람의 땅 곧 바빌론 도성을 두고, 주님께서 예언자 예레미야를 시켜서 선포하신 말씀이다.

2   "너희는 세계 만민에게 이 소식을 선포하고 이 소식을 전하여라. 봉화불을 올려서 이 소식을 전하여라. 숨기지 말고 전하여라. '바빌론이 함락되었다. 2)벨 신이 수치를 당하였다. 마르둑 신이 공포에 떤다. 바빌론의 신상들이 수치를 당하고, 우상들이 공포에 떤다.'

3   북녘에서 한 민족이 침략하여 왔으니, 바빌로니아를 쳐서 그 땅을 황무지로 만들 것이니, 거기에는 사는 사람이 아무도 없을 것이다. 사람과 짐승이 사라질 것이다."

이스라엘 백성의 귀환

4   "그 날이 오고, 그 때가 되면, 이스라엘 백성과 유다 백성이 다 함께 돌아올 것이다. 나 주의 말이다. 그들은 울면서 돌아와서, 그들의 하나님 나 주를 찾을 것이다.

5   그들은 시온으로 가는 길을 물어 보며, 이 곳을 바라보며 찾아올 것이다. 돌아온 그들은 나 주와 언약을 맺을 것이다. 절대로 파기하지 않을 영원한 언약을 맺고, 나와 연합할 것이다.

6   나의 백성은 길 잃은 양 떼였다. 목자들이 그들을 그릇된 길로 인도하여, 그들이 산 속에서 헤맸다. 양 떼가 산과 언덕에서 방황하며, 쉬던 곳을 잊어버렸다.

7   그들을 보는 자마다 그들을 잡아 먹었다. 양 떼를 잡아먹은 원수들은 이르기를 '그들이 그들의 주, 곧 의로운 처소이며 조상의 희망인 그들의 주에게 범죄하였으니, 우리에게는 죄가 없다' 하고 말하였다."

8   "너희는 바빌로니아에서 탈출하여라. 3)바빌로니아 사람들의 땅에서 떠나라. 양 떼 앞에서 걸어가는 숫염소처럼 앞장서서 나오너라.

9   보아라, 내가 북녘 땅에서 강대국들의 연합군을 일으켜서, 바빌로니아를 쳐들어가게 하겠다. 그들이 바빌로니아 쪽으로 진을 치고 있다가, 바빌로니아를 정복할 것이다. 그들의 화살은 절대로 빈손으로 돌아오지 않는 노련한 용사와 같을 것이다.

10   4)바빌로니아가 약탈당할 것이니, 약탈하는 자들이 모두 흡족하게 털어 갈 것이다. 나 주의 말이다."

바빌론의 멸망

11   "나의 소유, 나의 백성을 노략한 바빌로니아야, 너희는 그저 즐거워하고 기뻐서 뛰는구나. 너희는 그저 초원의 송아지처럼 뛰어다니고, 힘센 말처럼 소리를 지르는구나.

12   그러므로 너희의 어머니 바빌론 도성이 크게 수치를 당할 것이며, 너희를 낳은 여인이 치욕을 당할 것이다. 보아라, 이제 바빌로니아는 온 세상에서 가장 뒤떨어진 나라, 메마르고 황량한 사막이 될 것이다.

13   나 주의 분노 때문에, 바빌론 도성은 아무도 살 수 없는 땅이 되고, 온 나라가 황무지로 뒤바뀔 것이다. 그러면 그 곳을 지나는 사람마다 그 곳에 내린 모든 재앙을 보고, 놀라며 조롱할 것이다."

14   "활을 당기는 모든 사람들아, 너희는 바빌론 도성을 에워싸고 진을 쳐라. 그 도성에 활을 쏘아라. 화살을 아끼지 말고 쏘아라. 그 도성은 나에게 범죄하였다.

15   너희는 그 도성을 에워싸고 함성을 올려라. 그 도성이 손들고 항복하였다. 성벽을 받친 기둥벽들이 무너지고, 성벽이 허물어졌다. 내가 원수를 갚는 것이니, 너희는 그 도성에 복수하여라. 그 도성이 남에게 한 것과 똑같이 너희도 그 도성에 갚아 주어라.

16   너희는 바빌로니아에서 씨뿌리는 사람도 멸절시키고, 추수 때에 낫을 든 사람도 멸절시켜라. 바빌로니아에서 살고 있는 외국 사람들은, 공격하여 오는 저 무서운 군대를 피하여 저마다 자기 민족에게로 돌아가고, 누구나 자기 나라로 도망할 것이다."

이스라엘의 회복

17   "이스라엘은 사자들에게 쫓겨서 흩어진 양이다. 처음에는 앗시리아 왕이 이스라엘을 양처럼 잡아먹었고, 그 다음에는 바빌로니아 왕이 마침내 그 뼈까지 먹어 치웠다.

18   그러므로 나 만군의 주, 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 내가 앗시리아 왕에게 벌을 내렸듯이, 바빌로니아 왕과 그의 나라에도 벌을 내리겠다.

19   그러나 이스라엘은, 내가 그의 초장으로 데려다 놓을 것이니, 그들이 갈멜과 바산에서 풀을 뜯고, 에브라임 산지와 길르앗에서 마음껏 먹을 것이다."

20   "그 날이 오고 그 때가 되면, 내가 살아 남게 한 사람들을 용서할 터이니, 이스라엘의 허물을 아무리 찾아도 찾지 못하고, 유다의 죄를 아무리 찾아도 발견하지 못할 것이다. 나 주의 말이다."

하나님께서 바빌로니아를 심판하시다

21   "너는 5)므라다임 땅으로 쳐올라가고, 6)브곳 주민이 사는 곳으로 쳐올라가거라. 너는 그들을 칼로 쳐죽이고, 뒤쫓아가서 7)남김없이 진멸시켜라. 내가 너에게 명한 모든 것을 그대로 하여라. 나 주의 말이다.

22   바빌로니아 땅에서 이미 전쟁의 소리와 큰 파괴의 소리가 들려 온다.

23   세상을 쳐부수던 쇠망치가 어쩌다가 이렇게 깨지고 부서지게 되었는가? 바빌로니아가 어쩌다가 이렇게 세계 만민이 놀라도록 비참하게 되었는가?

24   바빌로니아야, 내가 너를 잡으려고 올무를 놓았는데 네가 그것도 모르고 거기에 걸리고 말았구나. 네가 나에게 대항하였기 때문에, 피하지 못하고 붙잡힌 것이다.

25   나는 내 무기 창고를 열고, 분노의 무기들을 꺼내 놓았다. 이제 나 주 만군의 하나님이 8)바빌로니아 사람들의 땅에서 할 일이 있기 때문이다.

26   너희는 바빌로니아로 오너라. 멀리서부터 몰려오너라. 그 나라의 곡식 창고들을 열어 젖혀라. 전리품을 낟가리처럼 쌓아 놓고, 9)완전히 진멸시켜라. 그 나라에 아무것도 남겨 놓지 말아라.

27   황소 같은 자들을 모조리 쳐죽여라. 그들을 도살장으로 데려가거라. 그들에게 화가 미쳤다. 그들의 날, 그들이 벌 받을 때가 닥쳐왔기 때문이다."

28   (저 소리를 들어 보아라. 바빌로니아 땅에서 도망하여 빠져 나온 사람들이, 주 우리의 하나님께서 복수하셨다고, 그의 성전을 부순 자들에게 복수하셨다고, 시온에 소식을 전하고 있다.)

29   "너희는 활 쏘는 사람들을 불러다가 바빌론을 쳐라. 그들이 이스라엘의 거룩한 하나님, 주 앞에서 오만하게 행동하였으니 너희는 바빌론 도성을 포위하고 쳐라. 아무도 빠져 나가지 못하게 하여라. 너희는 그들의 소행대로 보복하여 주어라. 그들이 하였던 것과 똑같이 너희도 그들에게 갚아 주어라.

30   그러므로 그 날에는 바빌로니아의 젊은이들이 광장에서 쓰러져 죽고, 모든 군인이 전멸을 당할 것이다. 나 주의 말이다.

31   나 만군의 주, 주의 말이다. 너 오만한 자야, 내가 너를 치겠다. 너의 날 곧 네가 벌을 받을 때가 왔다.

32   오만한 자가 비틀거리다가 쓰러져도, 일으켜 줄 사람이 아무도 없을 것이다. 그 때에 내가 바빌로니아의 성읍에 불을 질러, 바빌로니아의 주변까지 다 태워 버리겠다."

33   "나 만군의 주가 말한다. 이스라엘 자손과 유다 자손이 다 함께 억압을 받고 있다. 그들을 포로로 잡아간 자들이 모두 그들을 단단히 붙잡아 두고, 보내 주기를 거절하였다.

34   그러나 그들의 구원자는 강하니, 그 이름은 '만군의 주'다. 내가 반드시 그들의 탄원을 들어주어서 이 땅에 평화를 주고, 바빌로니아 주민에게는 소란이 일게 하겠다."

35   "나 주의 말이다. 칼이 10)바빌로니아 사람을 친다. 바빌로니아 주민을 친다. 그 땅의 고관들과 지혜 있는 자들을 친다.

36   칼이 점쟁이들을 치니, 그들이 어리석은 자들이 된다. 칼이 그 땅의 용사들을 치니, 그들이 공포에 떤다.

37   칼이 그들의 말과 병거와 그들 가운데 있는 모든 외국 군대를 치니, 그들이 모두 무기력해진다. 칼이 그 땅의 보물 창고를 치니, 보물이 모두 약탈을 당한다.

38   11)가뭄이 땅의 물을 치니, 물이 말라 버린다. 바빌로니아는 온갖 우상을 섬기는 나라이니, 그 땅에 사는 사람들이 그 끔찍스러운 우상들 때문에 미쳐 버릴 것이다.

39   그러므로 바빌론 도성에서는 사막의 짐승들과 이리들이 함께 살고, 타조들도 그 안에서 살 것이다. 그 곳에는 다시는 사람이 살지 않을 것이며, 그 곳에는 영영 정착하는 사람이 없을 것이다.

40   소돔과 고모라가 그 이웃 성읍들과 함께 멸망하였을 때와 같이, 바빌론 도성에도 다시는 정착하여 사는 사람이 없을 것이며, 그 곳에 머무르는 사람이 없을 것이다. 나 주의 말이다."

41   "보아라, 한 백성이 북녘에서 오고 있다. 큰 나라가 온다. 수많은 왕들이 저 먼 땅에서 떨치고 일어났다.

42   그들은 활과 창으로 무장하였다. 잔인하고 무자비하다. 그들은 바다처럼 요란한 소리를 내며, 군마를 타고 달려온다. 딸 바빌로니아야, 그들은 전열을 갖춘 전사와 같이 너를 치러 온다.

43   바빌로니아 왕이 그 소식을 듣고, 두 팔에 맥이 풀린다. 해산의 진통을 하는 여인처럼 불안으로 괴로워한다."

44   "사자가 요단 강 가의 숲 속에서 뛰쳐 나와서 푸른 목장으로 달려 들듯이, 나도 갑자기 바빌로니아로 달려들어서, 그 주민을 몰아내고, 내가 택한 지도자를 그 곳에 세우겠다. 나와 같은 자가 누구며, 나로 더불어 다툴 자가 누구며, 나에게 맞설 목자가 누구냐?

45   그러므로 너희는, 나 주가 바빌론 도성을 두고 세운 계획을 듣고, 12)바빌로니아 사람들의 땅을 두고 생각한 나의 구상을 들어 보아라." "양 떼 가운데서 아주 어린 것들까지 끌려갈 것이니, 온 목장이 황무지가 될 것이다.

46   바빌론 도성이 함락되는 소리가 땅을 흔들고, 그들의 소리가 세계 만민에게 들릴 것이다."

Chapter 50

Babylon Will Be Captured

1    The LORD told me to say: Announce what will happen and don't leave anything out.

2   Raise the signal flags; shout so all nations can hear-- Babylon will be captured! Marduk, k) Babylon's god, will be ashamed and terrified, and his idols broken.

3   The attack on the Babylonians will come from the north; they and their animals will run, leaving the land empty.

Israel and Judah Will Return to Their Land

4   The LORD said: People of Israel and Judah, when these things happen you will weep, and together you will return to your land and worship me, the LORD your God.

5   You will ask the way to Zion and then come and join with me in making an agreement you won't break or forget.

6   My people, you are lost sheep abandoned by their shepherds in the mountains. You don't even remember your resting place.

7   I am your true pastureland, the one who gave hope to your ancestors. But you abandoned me, so when your enemies found you, they felt no guilt as they gobbled you down.

8   Escape from Babylonia, my people. Get out of that country! Don't wait for anyone else.

9   In the north I am bringing great nations together. They will attack Babylon and capture it. The arrows they shoot are like the best soldiers, l) always finding their target.

Babylonia will be conquered, and its enemies will carry off everything they want.

Babylon Will Be Disgraced

The LORD said:

11   People of Babylonia, you were glad to rob my people. You had a good time, making more noise than horses and jumping around like calves threshing grain. m)

12   The city of Babylon was like a mother to you. But it will be disgraced and become nothing but a barren desert.

13   My anger will destroy Babylon, and no one will live there. Everyone who passes by will be shocked to see what has happened.

14   Babylon has rebelled against me. Archers, take your places. Shoot all your arrows at Babylon.

15   Attack from every side! Babylon surrenders! The enemy tears down its walls and towers. I am taking my revenge by doing to Babylon what it did to other cities.

16   There is no one in Babylonia to plant or harvest crops. Even foreigners who lived there have left for their homelands, afraid of the enemy armies.

17   Israel is a flock of sheep scattered by hungry lions. The king of Assyria n) first gobbled Israel down. Then Nebuchadnezzar, o) king of Babylonia, crunched on Israel's bones.

18   I, the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, punished the king of Assyria, and I will also punish the king of Babylonia.

19   But I will bring Israel back to its own land. The people will be like sheep eating their fill on Mount Carmel and in Bashan, in the hill country of Ephraim and in Gilead.

20   I will rescue a few people from Israel and Judah. I will forgive them so completely that their sin and guilt will disappear, never to be found.

The LORD's Commands to the Enemies of Babylonia

21   The LORD said: I have told the enemies of Babylonia, "Attack the people of Merathaim and Pekod. p) Kill them all! Destroy their possessions!"

22   Sounds of war and the noise of destruction can be heard.

23   Babylonia was a hammer pounding every country, but now it lies broken. What a shock to the nations of the world!

24   Babylonia challenged me, the LORD God All-Powerful, but that nation doesn't know it is caught in a trap that I set.

25   I've brought out my weapons, and with them I will put a curse on Babylonia.

26   Come from far away, you enemies of Babylon! Pile up the grain from its storehouses, and destroy it completely, along with everything else.

27   Kill the soldiers of Babylonia, because the time has come for them to be punished.

28   The Babylonian army destroyed my temple, but soon I will take revenge. Then refugees from Babylon will tell about it in Zion.

29   Attack Babylon, enemy archers; set up camp around the city, and don't let anyone escape. It challenged me, the holy God, so do to it what it did to other cities.

Proud Babylon Will Fall

30   People of Babylon, I, the LORD, promise that even your best soldiers will lie dead in the streets.

31   Babylon, you should be named, "The Proud One." But the time has come when I, the LORD All-Powerful, will punish you.

32   You are proud, but you will stumble and fall, and no one will help you up. I will set your villages on fire, and everything around you will go up in flames.

33   You Babylonians were cruel to Israel and Judah. You took them captive, and now you refuse to let them go.

34   But I, the LORD All-Powerful, will rescue and protect them. I will bring peace to their land and trouble to yours.

35   I have declared war on you, your officials, and advisors.

36   This war will prove that your prophets are liars and fools. And it will frighten your warriors.

37   Then your chariot horses and the foreigners in your army will refuse to go into battle, and the enemy will carry away everything you treasure.

38   Your rivers and canals will dry up. All of this will happen, because your land is full of idols, and they have made fools of you.

39   Never again will people live in your land-- only desert animals, jackals, q) and unclean birds.

I destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and the nearby towns, and I will destroy Babylon just as completely. No one will live there again.

Babylonia Is Invaded

40   

The LORD said:

41   Far to the north, a nation and its allies have been awakened. They are powerful and ready for war.

42   Bows and arrows and swords are in their hands. The soldiers are cruel and show no pity. The hoofbeats of their horses echo like ocean waves crashing against the shore. The army has lined up for battle and is coming to attack you, people of Babylonia!

43   Ever since your king heard about this army, he has been weak with fear; he twists and turns in pain like a woman giving birth.

44   Babylonia, I will attack you like a lion from the forest, attacking sheep in a meadow along the Jordan. In a moment the flock runs, and the land is empty. Who will I choose to attack you? I will do it myself! No one can force me to fight or chase me away.

45   Listen to my plans for you, people of Babylonia. Your children will be dragged off, and your country destroyed.

46   The sounds of your destruction will be heard among the nations, and the earth will shake.
