22:22 ○ 그 자리에 모인 유대인들은 바울의 말을 여기까지 듣고는, 일제히 소리를 질러 댔다. “이런 자를 그냥 살려두어선 안 된다! 그는 죽어야 마땅하다!”

22:23 그들은 미친 듯이 고함을 질러 대면서, 옷을 벗어 던지고 흙을 움켜쥐고서 공중에 던졌다.

22:24 그러자 천부장은 바울을 병영 안으로 빨리 데리고 들어가라고 부하들에게 명령했다. 그리고 그를 채찍으로 심문하여, 사람들이 왜 이렇게 소동을 벌이는지 그 이유를 밝혀내라고 지시했다.

22:25 그래서 군인들이 채찍으로 치려고 바울을 결박하려 하자, 바울이 곁에 서 있는 백부장에게 말했다. “보십시오. 로마 시민을 재판도 하지 않은 채 매질을 가하는 법이 어디에 있소?”

22:26 이 말을 듣고, 백부장이 얼른 천부장에게 달려가서 보고했다. “천부장님, 어떻게 해야 할까요? 저 사람이 로마 시민이랍니다.”

22:27 그러자 천부장이 놀라워하며 바울에게 와서 물었다. “그대가 정말 로마 시민이오?” 바울이 대답했다. “그렇습니다.”

22:28 천부장이 말했다. “나도 로마 시민권을 가지고 있는데, 돈이 꽤 많이 들었소.” 바울이 대답했다. “저는 태어날 때부터 로마 시민입니다.”

22:29 이 말을 듣고, 바울을 심문하려고 했던 군인들이 즉시 물러갔다. 천부장 또한 바울이 로마 시민이라는 사실을 알고는, 그를 결박한 일 때문에 덜컥 겁이 났다.

22:30 ○ 이튿날, 천부장은 바울이 왜 유대인들에게 고발을 당했는지 그 이유를 직접 알아보려 했다. 그래서 그는 바울을 묶었던 사슬을 풀어 주게 한 뒤, 유대인 대제사장들과 온 공회 의원들을 모이게 했다. 그런 다음, 천부장은 바울을 데리고 나가서, 그들 앞에 세웠다.

23:1 바울은 공회 의원들의 얼굴을 똑바로 바라보면서 말했다. “형제 여러분, 저는 오늘날까지 올바른 양심을 가지고 하나님께 대한 제 의무를 다해 왔습니다.”

23:2 이 말을 듣고, 대제사장 아나니아가 곁에 서 있는 사람들에게 바울의 입을 치라고 명령했다.

23:3 그러자 바울이 그에게 말했다. “이 겉만 번지르르한 위선자여, 하나님께서 당신을 치실 것이오. 당신은 거기에 앉아 율법에 따라 나를 재판한다고 하면서, 나를 치라고 명령함으로써 도리어 당신 스스로 율법을 어겼소!”

23:4 그때 곁에 서 있던 사람들이 바울에게 말했다. “어디 그런 말로 감히 하나님의 대제사장을 모욕하느냐?”

23:5 바울이 말했다. “형제들이여, 저는 그 사람이 대제사장인 줄은 몰랐습니다. 성경에 기록되기를 ‘네 백성의 지도자들을 욕하지 말라.’ 한 것을 저도 잘 알고 있습니다.”

23:6 ○ 그러고 나서 바울은, 공회 의원들 중 일부가 사두개파요 또 일부는 바리새파인 것을 알고서, 이렇게 큰 소리로 말했다. “형제 여러분, 나는 조상 대대로 바리새파 사람입니다. 제가 오늘 여기서 재판을 받는 것은, 죽은 자의 부활을 믿는다는 이유에서입니다.”

23:7 이 말을 듣고, 공회 의원들은 둘로 갈라졌고, 바리새파와 사두개파 사이에 다툼이 벌어졌다.

23:8 사두개파 사람들은 부활이 없다고 말하고, 또한 천사들이나 영도 존재하지 않는다고 주장한 반면, 바리새파 사람들은 그런 것들을 모두 인정했기 때문이었다.

23:9 공회가 크게 소란해졌다. 그때 바리새파 율법학자들 가운데 몇 사람이 나서서 바울을 옹호했다. “우리는 이 사람에게서 아무런 잘못을 찾을 수 없습니다. 영이나 천사가 그에게 말해 주었을 수도 있지 않습니까?”

23:10 다툼과 논쟁이 더욱 격렬해지자, 천부장은 바울이 그들에게 찢겨 죽을까 염려되어, 군인들에게 그를 빼내어 병영으로 다시 데리고 가라고 명령했다.

23:11 ○ 그날 밤, 주님이 바울 곁에 서서 말씀하셨다. “용기를 내라! 예루살렘에서 네가 나에 대해 증언한 것처럼, 로마에서도 나를 증언해야 한다.”

23:12 ○ 이튿날 아침, 유대인들은 한데 뭉쳐 모의한 뒤에, 바울을 죽이기 전에는 먹지도 않고 마시지도 않겠다고 굳게 맹세했다.

23:13 바울을 죽이려는 이 모의에 가담한 사람은 무려 40명이 넘었다.

23:14 그들은 대제사장과 장로들에게 가서 말했다. “우리는 바울을 죽이기 전에는 아무것도 먹지 않기로 굳게 다짐했습니다.

23:15 그러니 이제 여러분과 의원들은 더 정확하게 조사할 일이 있다면서, 바울을 여러분들 앞에 데려오도록 천부장에게 요청하십시오. 그러면 우리는 바울이 이리로 오는 도중에 그를 감쪽같이 죽여 없앨 것입니다. 우리는 그런 만반의 준비를 다 해 놓았습니다.”

23:16 ○ 그런데 바울의 조카가 이 음모에 대해 미리 알아채고는, 급히 로마 병영으로 달려가 바울에게 그 사실을 알려 주었다.

23:17 바울이 백부장 한 사람을 불러 말했다. “이 청년을 즉시 천부장에게 데려다 주십시오. 긴히 전할 말이 있다고 합니다.”

23:18 백부장이 청년을 천부장에게 데려다 주며 보고했다. “죄수 바울이 저를 부르더니, 이 청년을 대장님께 즉시 데려다 주라고 했습니다. 긴히 드릴 말씀이 있다고 합니다.”

23:19 천부장은 청년의 손을 잡고 한쪽으로 데리고 가더니 물었다. “내게 긴히 전하겠다는 말이 무엇인가?”

23:20 청년이 말했다. “유대인들이 대장님을 찾아와서, 내일 바울을 한 번 더 공회 앞에 데리고 나와 달라고 요구할 것입니다. 그들은 그렇게 요구하기로 공모했습니다.

23:21 그러나 대장님께서 그것을 허락하시면 안 됩니다. 40명이 넘는 유대인들이 도중에 바울을 덮쳐 죽이려고 길가에 잠복해 있습니다. 그 사람들은 하나로 뭉쳐 바울을 죽이기 전에는 먹지도 않고 마시지도 않겠다고 서약을 했습니다. 그 사람들은 지금 바울을 죽일 만반의 준비를 다 갖춰 놓고, 대장님의 허락만 기다리고 있습니다.”

23:22 천부장이 말했다. “알았다, 이 사실을 나에게 알렸다는 말을 아무에게도 하지 말라.” 이렇게 당부한 뒤, 천부장은 그 청년을 돌려보냈다.

23:23 ○ 천부장은 즉시 백부장 두 사람을 불러 명령했다. “너희는 오늘 밤 아홉 시에 가이사랴로 출발할 수 있도록 보병 200명과 마병 70명, 그리고 창을 쓰는 병사 200명을 대기시켜라.

23:24 또 바울을 벨릭스 총독에게 무사히 호송할 수 있도록 그를 태울 말도 준비하라.”

23:25 그런 명령을 내린 뒤, 이어 천부장은 총독에게 보내는 편지를 썼다.

23:26 “글라우디오 루시아가 총독 벨릭스 각하께 문안을 드립니다.

23:27 제가 보내는 이 사람은 유대인들에게 붙잡혀 살해당할 위험에 처했으나, 제가 군인들을 보내어 구출해 냈습니다. 그가 로마 시민이라는 것을 알았기 때문입니다.

23:28 저는 유대인들이 왜 이 사람을 고발했는지, 그 이유를 알고자 그를 유대인의 공회로 데리고 갔습니다.

23:29 그 결과, 저는 그가 유대인들의 율법 문제로 고발을 당했다는 것을 알게 되었지만, 그를 감옥에 가두거나 혹은 사형을 시킬 만한 죄는 발견할 수 없었습니다.

23:30 그런데도 그를 암살하려는 음모가 있다는 정보를 듣게 되어, 곧바로 그를 각하께로 보냅니다. 그리고 그를 고발한 자들에게도 앞으로는 그에 대한 사건을 각하 앞에 제소하도록 일러두었습니다.”

22The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, "Rid the earth of him! He's not fit to live!" 23As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24the commander ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and questioned in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn't even been found guilty?" 26When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. 'What are you going to do?' he asked. 'This man is a Roman citizen.' 27The commander went to Paul and asked, 'Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?' 'Yes, I am,' he answered. 28Then the commander said, " had to pay a big price for my citizenship." "But I was born a citizen," Paul replied. 29Those who were about to question him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains. 30The next day, since the commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.

1Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, 'My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.' 2At this the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth. 3Then Paul said to him, 'God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! You sit there to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck!' 4Those who were standing near Paul said, "You dare to insult God's high priest?" 5Paul replied, "Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: 'Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.' " 6Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, 'My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead.' 7When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8(The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.) 9There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued vigorously. 'We find nothing wrong with this man,' they said. 'What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?' 10The dispute became so violent that the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them. He ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force and bring him into the barracks. 11The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome." 12The next morning the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. 13More than forty men were involved in this plot. 14They went to the chief priests and elders and said, 'We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. 15Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.' 16But when the son of Paul's sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul. 17Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, 'Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.' 18So he took him to the commander. The centurion said, 'Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.' 19The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, 'What is it you want to tell me?' 20He said: 'The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him. 21Don't give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request." 22The commander dismissed the young man and cautioned him, "Don't tell anyone that you have reported this to me." 23Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, 'Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. 24Provide mounts for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.' 25He wrote a letter as follows: 26Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings. 27This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen. 28I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin. 29I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment. 30When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him.
